Thirty-five seconds of paradise: Feel your blood pressure drop!
On the ferry to Ocracoke!
The Miss Hatteras docks coming in from fishing through Hatteras Inlet.
It's all good from this vantage.
The Outer Banks, North Carolina Bodie Island (pronounced body, due to those that washed ashore) is the most northern in the chain of barrier islands, which stretch over 200 miles north to southwest. The most northern parts of Bodie are in Currituck County. North of Corolla (Cor-a-la, not Cor-roll-la) there are 4-wheel drive communities. Roanoke Island lies in Pamlico Sound, home of Dare County seat, Manteo and is the "lost" colony. The dilapidated Bonner Bridge (pictured above) connects Bodie Island to Pea Island, which is only an occasional island. On maps, it appears to be the northern end of Hatteras. Sometimes it is, but during storms, the ocean cuts inlets between Pea and Hatteras Island, which is currently the situation. Pea Island is owned by the Federal Government and is run by the National Park Service as a wildlife refuge. Rodanthe, as in "The Nights of" is actually an American Indian name and the "e" is pronounced. (Ro-danth-ee) The original name, which I love, is Chicimacamico. Say if fast. Buxton is home home to the Hatteras Lighthouse. The cape is the spot on the Outer Banks furthest from the mainland, approximately 30 miles offshore. Look for Buxton Village Books! None of the islands to the south are accessible via roadway. The NC Ferry system is wonderful. To the south, enjoy Ocracoke's sixteen miles of beaches. Blackbeard loved the place and ended up dying there, ironically pursued by those without jurisdictional power there. The court case against VA's Spotswood by NC's governor Eden is still on the books. Blackbeard's quartermaster, William Howard still has ancestors on the island, who mix great island drinks! Portsmouth Island lies southeast of Ocracoke. It has great fishing, shelling, and lots of bugs. Campsites are available via the NPS. Cape Lookout is the last of the Outer Banks. It is accessible by boat from Harker's Island. Enjoy!
